In a nutshell, the 2.4Ghz band is able to reach further, giving you better signal further from the Hub, but the 5Ghz band offers much higher speeds at a lower range or distance away from the hub. But things have moved on since then and Virgin haven't really kept up. Despite that Virgin Media UK seems to be stuck at 20Mbps.
My experience with Virgin media has actually been very good. Broadband and TV have never failed once in over a year now. The TV box is a bit buggy AND can be slow navigating menus ETC but it does work well. Positive experience and for me customer service was not really an issue as I did nt need to contact for faults etc

i have a dir-850l connected to a virgin media suphub connected as modem only and have been using the router for a few months with no issues all ways get between 80 - 100 meg on wireless and 162 meg download on wired. yesterday seemed to have very slow downloads on wireless and put down to my provider.
